The Rum Diary (4/10)

There are very few Hollywood movies with big names attached to them that I would give a below-5 rating. But from an entertainment standpoint I felt that this didn't reach a satisfactory level.
Johnny Depp, like Nicolas Cage, Brad Pitt, and to a certain extent Tom Hanks; actors who have been around long enough and often enough, will start to have developed some acting "habits" - usually on facial expressions.
And when Depp gets into an off-beat comedic performance, he whips out these same set of expressions a la The Rum Diary. And it's not something I would appreciate, much like his take on Sleepy Hollow.
But the worse part about this movie would have to be pacing and development, or the lack thereof. The plot was subpar and the story progression was dull and slow.
Aaron Eckhart wasn't exciting. Michael Rispoli no longer has that onscreen charm and he was the "sidekick". Giovanni Ribisi wasn't as effective as he could have been. And Amber Heard who seemed to have a knack for these offbeat movies, was just adequate.
Despite the nice locales where the movie was shot, nothing else entertained. Even the dialogue was boring.
I can't remember when was the last time Depp had missed a mark. So it's quite unfortunate for this one to come along.

  1. With all due respect, I must disagree. I enjoyed this movie very much and was very touched by the love shown by Johnny to his good friend Hunter in this film. I saw it three times in the theater and would have seen it more, if it had stayed around a little longer. I'm looking forward to owning it on DVD in February.
