Chronicle (9/10)

Chronicle reminded me so much of Cloverfield that I'm surprised J. J. Abrams actually had nothing to do with this.

Instead, two new names popped up. Max Landis and director Josh Trank shared the writing credits.

If an anti-hero movie is done well, like The Watchmen, it can be really, really good. And Chronicle was really, really good.

Everything was told through a first-person video camera. From a camera carried around by one of the main characters to mobile phone cameras to CCTV, Trank had worked around the very many limitations where a camera wouldn't normally exist.

But therein lied question of whether in reality anyone would be so obsessed with a video camera that they would really take it along with them everywhere they go, even though it would be really weird to be having conversations with another person from behind a camera.

However, the direction was very good. The idea as awesome. The acting from the general unknowns suited their roles very well. And everything executed quite flawlessly I must say.

And this was by no means a small budget movie because there were a lot of CGI going on. But even so, everything looked very realistic. Only the sound effects sometimes I had to question because the flying and cutting through the air sound effects sounded too much like a superhero movie.

This movie had almost everything. Definitely one of the best of the year and one of my favourites of the year, and it's only February!
