The Grey (7/10)

If you take a step back and take another look at The Grey, it really was just another typical survival movie by a group of people.

The only difference would be that this movie focused on wolves. And it was really well made. Although I would still say the characters could have had more focus because only Liam Neeson and Frank Grillo's characters didn't look one-dimensional.

But for a movie that was focussing on the wolves, there really weren't enough wolves. I don't mean in numbers because they did run in a pack. But they just didn't share enough screen time because I would have loved to more of them.

Having said that, however, their quick in and out of the screen did add on to the suspense and their mysterious and mystical nature. So the director did have that going for him.

But what I really didn't like was how the wolves would actually not appear when the survivors had to tell their side of the story, or at least that's what it seemed to me. Sometimes I thought that was the perfect time to take another human down and yet they didn't appear.

Still, this was a movie that was very well made. Especially with no CGI or special effects when they had to include the wolves in the scene, and yet they were able to let your mind fill in the blanks with what's not shown onscreen.

I would have loved to see more of that last scene though, but I guess it wasn't possible with the self-imposed limitations on special effects I suppose. Nevertheless, a very clever way to end.
