I couldn't be sure what exactly didn't work. The colours and animation were nice. So it must be the storytelling by the directors.
The first half especially was very slow and uneventful. The way Once-ler told his story wasn't really flashbacks because they were too long and too episodic, alienating the viewers from the main character which was supposed to be Zac Efron's character. So alternating between the past and present just got too tedious.
The best thing about The Lorax was that it featured Betty White who always delivers, even in an animation. Just hearing her voice performing always bring the joy.
Another thing that surprised me was the extreme lack of rhyming in the dialogue. I remember Horton had an abundance of it, to emphasised on the fantasy of Dr. Seuss. So I was expecting this to be the same but the poetry came few and far in between.
