Parental Guidance (5/10)

This started with a lot of cliche and old jokes that were just recycled. Everything seemed weak and lame to begin with and only by the third act that things started to build up nicely.

What I really disliked was how the movie made fun of a lot of the new age thinking. We live in a different world as compared to a mere 10 years ago. Kids these days are so different as most of them are all screen-agers. And if parents don't change from the way they were brought up by their parents, they may not be able to connect properly with their kids.

And with so little progress after so much hard work has been done, the creators of the movie decided to make fun of that little progress that human kind has made. And it's no different than the that school bully who uses intimidation to stop his environment from changing.

I felt sad watching all the belittling and over-exaggeration on something that is so fragile in the world today. The term one step forward and two steps back is an understatement here.

Billy Crystal and Bette Midler have heart in their acting, with Midler shining the brightest in front of the camera. But because the script was so episodic, it was difficult for all the actors to get into a groove. And I'm surprised the children did as well as they did because watching the adults were cringe-worthy a lot of times. There were a lot of over-acting and over-compensations.

But in the end, there really was a beautiful finish. However, director Andy Fickman couldn't keep the whole movie up to a nice standard of storytelling.
