Cloud Atlas (6/10)

If actors ever had a contract to do 4 characters in a year, doing Cloud Atlas could last them two years.

A very ambitious film running for almost 3 hours. And very challenging for the audience because it was quite confusing with so many characters and so many timelines, and to sit through that for 3 hours without a concrete story to follow, was also the downfall of the movie.

The first couple of characters of Tom Hanks, I thought he was in this movie to just have fun with some portrayals of oddballs. Perhaps a small supporting character of sorts, but later I realised that he was one of the key actors too.

The addition of Zhou Xun as one of Hank's characters' sister was way off. That was another downfall of the movie because when you cast Zhou or Doona Bae as a Caucasian, they looked either sounded really weird or looked badly in disguise. And the stereotyping of the Orientals came in when they put Jim Sturgess, James D'Arcy or Hugo Weaving in narrow eyes. I thought that was slightly poor in taste even though the actors themselves did wonderfully.

As a book, this was perhaps a very good story. But to have it on the silver screen and with limited running time, it probably didn't translated well.
