Like Monsters Inc., the first one had a lot more heart. The story between Steve Carell's character and the three girls had more layers and was more touching all throughout.
This sequel was honestly a little messy. They tried to do too much, sub-plots weren't elaborated enough, and in too short a time. The love story between Carell and Wiig should have had more moments for development. The sub-plot with the young lovers was even worse. The introduction to the new villain voiced by Benjamin Bratt also never fully grown into something formidable.
I think this was a classic case of wanting to push for a sequel for the wrong reason.
What worked? I realised I had a silly grin on my face the whole time, especially when Elsie Fisher's great voice acting that still had her character as one of the most adorable characters from an animated movie.
