But horror movies these days have only the beginning and the ending worth anything, the middle parts are just some fillers and going-through-the-motions. Always the typical and illogical scares and suspense to make sure the movie reaches at least an hour and twenty minutes long so that cinemas can sell tickets.
And Mama is no different. Being produced by Guillermo del Toro didn't really help anything apart from the final scene where the "ghost" really looked like something out of Pan's Labyrinth.
Spoiler alert.
But really now, if you've seen one you've seen them all. There were some really stupid scenes like the doctor venturing off on his own into the woods - made no sense at all. Or the jealous and controlling aunt was the only to be taken over by the spirit and nobody else - made no sense at all.
There were also a lot of random scares which I despise. But one thing I did appreciate was when the audience was first introduced slowly to the young Isabelle Nelisse's character, she looked really scary. And that was probably the only part that was done well.
The premise was somewhat interesting. Also, the ending was something different. It brought up emotions from the audience through the storytelling. But was it enough to make the experience worth while? Only if you're a horror fan I suppose.
