Blue Jasmine (6/10)

A typical Woody Allen film - a very character and dialogue-driven story that boasted wonderful performances from the cast.

I wouldn't be surprised if Cate Blanchett gets a nod for an Oscar next year for her performance here. She was a force to be reckoned with. She had those crazy eyes going on when she was depressed, and quickly switched to normalcy when she got excited. But no matter her mood, you can always tell she was hanging on by a thread.

The rest of the cast was just as good, from the veterans like Alec Baldwin to Sally Hawkins, Andrew Dice Clay and Bobby Cannavale. I never really enjoyed Peter Sarsgaard but I liked his performance here. Only Louis C. K. left me wanting more from him but good thing was that he didn't have that much screen time.

All the characters felt very real and had their own story to tell. And the story centred on the misfortune of human nature and how falling back to comfort and familiar felt safer than venturing outside of the comfort zone to new experiences.

Above all else, it was Blanchett that I felt was unrecognisable and committed fully to her role; and that's why even though I didn't like her character, I was with her all the way.

What I personally didn't like about the film was that after watching it, it didn't leave me with any feelings whatsoever. Perhaps I couldn't relate to the characters personally so that's why I didn't feel for the story. And in the end, it wasn't a very satisfying movie experience for me. But having said that, I was still transported into the journey of Blanchett's character in those brief periods of her life.
