Battle Of The Year (5/10)

I went in to this movie expecting a lot of dancing, like the Step Up franchise. What I got was only some dancing in the beginning and end, and some montages. Nothing like Step Up.

Instead, the dose of drama was injected at every turn. So much drama for a dance competition. I didn't mind the reality style elimination nor the long-time rivalry between two main dancers. But everything else could have been done without. Especially the baby.

I also didn't like the inconsistency of Laz Alonso's character, who supposedly promised free-reigns to Josh Holloway's character; and then later breathed down his neck at every opportunity.

What I did like was Holloway's addition into this movie, as well as Alonso's. But their acting was sometimes too much, and that I would give fault to the director Benson Lee. I also thought Josh Peck was a wrong choice as his acting felt really off.

Also, surprisingly too, Chris Brown had the best onscreen charisma out of the lot (as much as I have no care for his music). What this movie could have benefited more from was Brown, because for some crazy reason he was nowhere to be found in the third act; and that sparkle he provided was sorely missing.

While there were plenty of mentions that the Koreans were the best, but when it came to them, they seemed to have the least impressive moves. So weird. Every other country featured seemed to be better.

The only thing impressive was that the movie was shot on the actual BOTY location in France, while the event took place. That's why the third act felt so real. Because it was.

Overall, too much drama and not enough B-Boy. I have never been into B-Boy so I wasn't all that impressed anyway. And strangely enough, there wasn't a single "B-girl"...
