I couldn't appreciate what the director was trying to achieve for this movie. Oliver Hirschbiegel made the whole first half with very short scenes. So short that every scene couldn't get any traction in the dramatic or emotional department.
It would be unfair to him to say that it's all his fault. In actual fact, it may not be his fault but the fault of the screenplay writer. Not sure who thought it was a good idea to give someone who hasn't had a lot of writing credited to his name. And so the result was horrible dialogues that even in their very limited capacity, or maybe because of their limited capacity, produced a very dry movie almost devoid of emotion.
Because of the way the scenes were shortened, the actors themselves couldn't really produce good quality acting as well. One had to really sit through the first half in order to find some good acting from Naveen Andrews.
As for Naomi Watts, even if she did a fantastic impression of Princess Diana, there's no way to for her to save the movie.
The only thing that made the whole experience a little better was the very ending that was a little touching. But perhaps not fully to the credit of Hirschbiegel because we knew how the death of the Princess had saddened the whole of England, if not the world.
The best part of the movie was this poster above. It speaks volumes and conveys layers and layers of emotions. Total opposite of the actual movie.
