I didn't really know who Oscar Isaac was before this movie. And now, I know. As much as how Matthew McConaughey and Chiwetel Ejiofor became their characters, I would put Isaac in that same league of extra ordinary performances.
You could follow Isaac's character in terms of his feelings and emotions and frustrations, just by watching Isaac in this movie. And can he sing! That opening number, I was just lost in the song, in his vocals. It's as if he wrote that song with his own life experience. And yet, in his portrayal, you could see that he did not because it was not really his song.
The only other memorable performance here was Carey Mulligan and, surprisingly Adam Driver - not fantastic but memorable nonetheless.
These rich characters that the Coen Brothers created were great to watch as we "discover" them and who they were. And nothing about this original screenplay felt fictional. It was just realistic and that's why so fun to watch, and yet so depressing at the same time.
And that final scene, mind blown once again. Great job by the Coen Brothers and one of my personal favourites of the year.
