It is almost in the same category as Jerry McGuire, dealing with an American sport and all that behind-the-scenes pressure that happens before the actual games. But it's nowhere near as sexy, funny nor engaging as the former.
The writing left me wanting more. A lot of times I thought the dialogue was way too simplistic and straight forward. So much so that the cast had problems delivering the lines, and all of the cast including Costner and Jennifer Garner sometimes looked awkward because of that.
And I have to blame this on Reitman as it was his responsibility to bring out the best in his actors. It was his responsibility to notice when something wasn't working.
Also, he used a lot of paneling work as if it was a comic book which I didn't think it suited this particular movie. They took me out of the immersion quite a number of times as they were more of a distraction.
But when it came to the storytelling, going from frame to frame, Reitman still gave us some quality there. And I can't lie, I was at the edge of my seat during the climactic part towards the end even though I knew what was going to happen.
I thought the movie wrapped up quite nicely too with a very moving final scene.
