The Machine (5/10)

Here's another futuristic, robot-creating movie that has had some traction from winning some of the British film awards.

I thought the first half was very slow. The build-up took some time to get to the more interesting part of the story. But the running time was just right (as movies these days like to take it close to or over the two-hour mark).

The entire movie had such a bleak backdrop. And yet when Caity Lotz's character appeared, she seemed too perky and looked like she didn't belong there. I think if her character was more in-line with the somber tone of the movie then the story would have gelled a bit more.

But when she became The Machine, that's the best acting I've seen her so far. She looked awesome, and that really looked like acting. Nothing she's done in the TV series Arrow or the recent Battle Of The Year dance movie can compare to her work here.

And I just realised she can really throw some nice roudhouse kicks. Hollywood, please make her an action star. I believe she would excel in it.

However, Lotz was the only bright spot in this bleak futuristic, yet tiny, world that writer-director Caradog W. James has created.

The dialogue and script were quite loose, they couldn't help the story move to move along and develop the characters in a way that showed their emotions. I didn't even realised when feelings started to get involved. The drama needed a lot of work and it was a drama-heavy and emotional story.

I would have liked the movie to end with some essence to take away but it wasn't a strong ending either.
