Chef (6/10)
From Iron Man and its sequel, to Cowboys & Aliens, and before The Jungle Book; Jon Favreau has decided on something that looked like a passion project and so we have Chef.
Written, directed by and starring himself and a few of his close friends; I had hoped it to be better.
What I didn't like about it was strangely also what I liked about it, which was the first half; because it took too long to get to the food truck but it helped also that he took his time to tell the backdrop of the story. Given to anyone else to direct, the first half would have probably been not more than 30 minutes.
So you can see I'm somewhat torn about this.
Also, I thought there were a few too many sequences on preparing food or something similar and having music playing in the background. Although they brought out the passion for food and its careful preparation which clearly is a craft, but after three of those I was ready to call it quits.
So again you can see I'm somewhat torn about this.
And Favreau's character seemed to be someone that's damn near perfect. On one arm he's got Sofia Vergara who always appeared in tight dresses, and on the other he's got Scarlett Johansson who has even made those star tattoos look sexy.
He's a fantastic cook, his Twitter account gains followers by the thousands each day and he has a very loyal sous chef. The only flaw he has was the oversight to his son's needs.
While I did enjoy the storytelling and his direction, but I just thought it was a bit too long and some scenes was very cliche like how John Leguizamo knows when to show up just at the right time.
Dustin Hoffman wasn't very notable here and Robert Downey Jr.'s brief scene didn't wow me at all considering he's got that megawatt star power and onscreen charisma.
Throughout the second half the movie plateaued and never made me care or feel more for the characters or story. But then again, I'm no foodie.
