Muppets Most Wanted (6/10)

Jason Segel's script for The Muppets had a lot of heart and it had a more interesting premise about bringing the Muppets back on the silver screen.

While James Bobin came back to direct this sequel, a certain magic was missing from it all even though Nicholas Stoller was there to assist in the writing once again.

The main plot had a premise that had a potential of being hilarious, swapping the two frogs. But the execution, albeit tickled me, didn't achieve the same laugh-out-loud moments that the creators thought they could have.

I was never a fan of the Muppets but Segel and Amy Adams made them lovable. Ricky Gervais didn't have that. Maybe because he was playing a bad guy, but his performance was nothing notable too.

Ty Burrell and Tina Fey had much smaller roles but without their subplots, this movie would not have been as enjoyable. And the smart move was having so many cameos that you couldn't help but smile when you saw them. A certain singing judge had the best one with a play on his own name.

Also, I was very pleasantly surprised to see Ray Lliotta - usually the very serious bad guy - singing and dancing. I guess that was his whole point.

Once again, Miss Piggy's singing was mind boggling to me. I really felt like one of the audience in the movie watching her, or being tortured by her. Plus the songs this time didn't have the same impact as the original movie. The lyrics, like the script, didn't have enough heart.

Mr. Segel, you were sorely missed in this one. But if you made the decision of not coming back, it's very respectable to know that if you can't make it great, don't make it at all.
