Neighbors (8/10)

Also known as Bad Neighbours, this must be a runaway hit of the summer. Who would have expected this to be so well received?

Written by newcomers Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O'Brien, and directed by Nicholas Stoller; the cast really made this work. Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne looked like an unlikely couple but the portrayals of their characters were a perfect match.

The other perfect couple here was the bromance between Zac Efron and Dave Franco. They were hilarious. The only thing that wasn't complete was their individual side stories that was only touched on a little.

I could have done without a couple of the gags like the milking scene. Also, in the middle of the story something kind of fell apart. The bros-before-hoes sub plot didn't have any continuity as the characters suddenly went back to being each other's threat even after all that pretense.

What was so great about this movie was the marriage between the talents and the writings. It's as if the writing was played towards the actors strength and all four main stars were at their best. Too bad Christopher Mintz-Plasse didn't really stand out a lot.

But that slack was picked up by Ike Barinholtz who stole all his scenes. He was nothing but hilarious. It took me a long time to like him on The Mindy Project, but here, it was an immediate love affair.

Like Ted, this R-18 comedy has great re-watch value.
