Ant-Man Has Found Its Director
Fans were left dismayed when Marvel announced the departure of Edgar Wright from the director's chair two weeks ago.
However, Marvel was sure that they would keep the original release date of summer next year; meaning that they would have to keep Edgar Wright's script and maybe only do some simple re-writes.
And now Marvel has announced that they have found their director. Peyton Reed has just been named and will take over the reins. Also mentioned was Adam McKay, who was also shortlisted just a few days ago together with Reed, will step in to do the re-writes.
Reed's more famous directorial efforts included Bring It On, The Break-Up and Yes Man, with a few episodes of New Girl. He hasn't really done a lot (moreover those titles are years old, whereas Adam McKay has a more solid resume) but I still have faith in Marvel and Kevin Feige that they would assemble the right team for this and every other project. Look at what happened with Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
On the other hand, I wouldn't choose McKay for this job anyway because his movies are more loony (think Anchorman, The Other Guys and Step Brothers). But for writing credits, yes, McKay would be the man for the job as he's proven that many times he can deliver funny scripts. I could see his writing and Reed's direction to make this movie work.
I could also see how different this movie is going to be from the other Marvel properties. This looks like it would be a full-out comedy. And with Paul Rudd in the lead, it's easy to see it going that direction.
But what I would still have loved to see was Paul Rudd not doing a comedy but a Marvel action movie. With Edgar Wright's vision. Well, time to get over that.
