Winter's Tale (6/10)
Akiva Goldsman writes a lot of screenplays but seldom directs, and Winter's Tale was his first full length feature film.
The story was interesting, the script not so much. The direction as well wasn't top notched but the fantastical story saved it.
Goldsman had A Beautiful Mind and A Time To Kill to his credit. But he also wrote Batman & Robin and Angels & Demons. Most of the time there were other writers involved but not Winter's Tale. So you could see the strong and weak parts to his writing.
Particularly, the script wasn't as smooth as I would like. The dialogue sometimes was very cheesy or was forcing the story to move forward. But his concept for the story and the way it ended, I was very satisfied.
I liked Colin Farrell as the protagonist. He brought gentleness to his performance which his character needed. Sometimes the plot point became very fantastical and he managed to ground it and pull the audience back into the story.
Jessica Brown Findlay did great in stealing the heart of Farrell's character, but also the audience's. I also didn't mind Russell Crowe here though I thought his talents were a little wasted on a character that didn't quite had depth.
There were other big named actors such as William Hurt, Jennifer Connelly and Will Smith; and smaller ones like Kevin Durand and Kevin Corrigan who were just adequate and forgettable.
