We thought it would be Wonder Woman or Black Widow or Catwoman or Miss Marvel, but it seems like Sony may just beat everyone to the super-punch with the announcement that they are planning for a first female-led superhero character movie for 2017!
If you're not familiar with who is represented by Sony, it's any character that is under the Spider-Man umbrella. So if we look at who is in that Spider-verse that is a female superhero, we have Black Cat, Spider-Woman and Silver Sable. (Also Firestar from the 80's cartoon but doubt a character made specifically for the cartoon series would make the cut.)
Plans for Sinister Six remains unchanged for a 2016 release as well. Venom's standalone movie, now apparently with a title, Venom: Carnage, is slated for a 2017 release; while The Amazing Spider-Man 3 remains at the pushed-back date of 2018.
If Sony does go through with this, which I don't think they won't, I'm going to guess the character they are going to use would be Black Cat. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 already kind of set her up - just like how the producers used that movie to set up Sinister Six - with the appearance of Felicia played by Felicity Jones. In the comics, Felicia Hardy's secret identity is Black Cat.
Of course, I'm purely guessing here. It could very well be Spider-Woman just because there's the name-recognition value there. But anyone they do a movie on will be fine by me. After the slightly disappointing sequel of The Amazing Spider-Man, hopefully the producers learn from that and can now give us something worthy of The Amzing Spider-Man franchise.
