Dwayne Johnson Confirms His Role In Shazam Movie
He's finally made it official. After two weeks of teasing fans that he couldn't decide who to play in the DC and Warner Bros.' Shazam movie, he has now confirmed that he will be Black Adam and not Shazam.
I don't know this property at all apart from some faint memory of the cartoon series of Shazam on television when I was a kid. I remember what he looked like but that was it. I can't even remember if Black Adam was in that series.
However, what baffled me a little is that Black Adam is supposed to be the arch-nemesis of Shazam. So for someone like Dwayne Johnson to step into the DC universe as a villain seems a little bit strange because his screen time will be reduced to give way to the main character, Shazam (whether this is a good thing is up for debate and preference). Johnson has also more often than not played the good guy so if he's really a supervillain this will be an interesting performance by him.
But I also read somewhere that there is another version of Black Adam where he is this antihero trying hard to redeem himself - meaning that he's the complex character that Johnson described many times, and could he turn into a superhero at some point?
Darren Lemke is currently drafting the script but no further news on other cast or director.
However, Warner Bros. and DC has a date for 5 August 2016 that is still unannounced. Shazam could potentially take that slot depending on how fast they kick off this project. So far, no other DC titles have been in any news, and judging from how slow they have been with Batman v Superman, they had better go into production soon in order to meet the 5 August date. After all, they are not Marvel. (Har har.)
