The Purge: Anarchy (5.5/10)
I was not a fan of the first one that came out last year, so why did I go watch this one? Two words. Movie junkie. But I have to say, I enjoyed this one slightly more than the previous one.
The first half was just so slow. I was wondering why the need to spend so much time just to set up the tone when we already had that from the first movie. I was quite bored right from the start.
But once we got down to it in the second half, it got slightly better, though not much. I thought they did the right thing having a whole new cast in this sequel so that they could tell the same story from a different point of view.
There's not a whole lot of plot points in this story, like the first one; so it's up to the director to create that atmosphere of that world, and once again James DeMonaco did it. Well, no surprise there since he's the one who directed and wrote both movies.
I'm not a fan of Zach Gilford here. I thought him doing The Last Stand with Arnold Schwarzenegger was a good move but nothing after that. I thought quite highly of him because of his performance in the Friday Night Lights TV series, but so far I'm not impressed. Also maybe because he hasn't been offered anything better.
Most of the cast here were all unknowns or had some screen time in TV series, all but one; and that's Frank Grillo - who was just super in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
I think we may have just seen a new action movie star got born in this movie. Grillo looked hard, tough, gritty and ready for a good fight. Cast him as The Punisher and I think we'll have a winner.
He's the only thing that made this movie watchable. He was the anchor, the heart and soul of the movie.
But I will also say that the last one-quarter of the movie was quite entertaining as the uprising began. I thought that made sense seeing as I was never onboard with The Purge's concept.
