Dracula Untold (5/10)
So the bats didn't actually form Dracula's wings, like what the poster led me to believe...
New director Gary Shore couldn't deliver where he had to. With this fresh take on the character Dracula, there were a lot more questions unanswered by the end of the movie. Hence, his inexperience really showed.
That's not to say Shore was without talent. The first half of the movie developed really well, even from the beginning. The story progression, though sped up, was still easily followed without losing a beat.
The script, however, could have had a little more work. The expositions from the characters could have sounded a lot better, and there were parts in the story that should have made more sense, especially the ending.
Luke Evans carried the movie without problems. He's likable and has the charisma of a leading male. Dominic Cooper in this case didn't have too much to do, except looking evil and spewing out hateful words.
One surprisingly commendable effort was the way the female character was written in. Portrayed equally surprisingly well by Sarah Gadon, her character wasn't a mere damsel in distress but there were signs of courage and strength that Dracula needed from and relied on her.
But everything fell apart in the final battle. There was nothing great in the special effects nor the fight scenes that got the audience's adrenalin pumping. It actually was kind of a dud.
And allow me if you will to go in to SPOILERS for a bit.
---------------------
What I really didn't understand was why Dracula didn't just kill the other vampires off while still protecting his son as he seemed like he's more than capable. Instead he passed him off to a human who's only weapon was a cross in his hand. Or why didn't Dracula look for his son after he was resurrected as that would have made more sense, even if it's after his son was all grown up.
I also didn't understand why Charles Dance's character was still alive in the end. I thought the whole point of him turning Dracula was so that he could return to a normal life.
Shore should have also found a different way to show the death of Gadon's character. Falling off that cliff from hundreds of feet high up would have tore her body into pieces, yet she could still talk?
----------------------
It started off with potential, somewhat, but ended really badly. Still, I would give it a second chance if it has made enough money for a sequel. Or was this part of that "monsters universe" that Legendary Pictures is planning?
