The Prince (7/10)

Another small budget movie that's trying to use its biggest star as the main attraction when in actual fact, Bruce Willis' role was quite small.

But I really enjoyed this movie, for the story and the pacing. It uses a classic formula for an action drama that kind of celebrates the late 90's.

Jason Patric unfortunately started his Hollywood profile as the guy who took over Keanu Reeves in Speed 2. And that sequel wasn't a good movie. Ever since then, he never had a big break again.

Again, unfortunately for Patric, this movie didn't get enough attention as not much marketing was thrown into promoting the movie because the studio behind it is not one of the bigger ones. Hence, I doubt a lot of people actually went and watched it.

I thought this was a solid movie. Patric carried it well. And the supporting cast of Willis and John Cusack strengthen the movie a lot.

Even Korean superstar Rain (though I believe his fame has waned in recent years) gave a believable performance. I think he shrunk a little, guess he's not working out that much when he doesn't have to put on shows and concerts.

Kudos to director Brian A. Miller, who's no stranger to the genre, for telling a dramatic action story that was compelling and interesting. And I really liked what he brought out of his actors, especially John Cusack even if he wasn't in a lot of the movie. Miller has worked with Patric prior to this and also recruited another of his previous collaborator, 50 Cent; and even his short scenes all looked fun.

The action never took centre stage though, it was always the drama acting as the driving force to push the slightly thin story by Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore forward. But Miller still need to improve on delivering the ending with a bigger bang because the action that I was waiting for did not reach any sort of culmination. It was way too simple.

But for what it represented, if you can appreciate it, it's quite a well made movie.
