Ouija (5/10)

First question is, why is Olivia Cooke in another horror so soon after The Quiet Ones and her fixture in Bates Motel? Is this really a wise career choice?

Other than that, I thought the other cast members were competent enough. I especially liked Douglas Smith who was memorable in Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters and he'll be in the upcoming Terminator: Genisys; though there wasn't much he needed to do for his role here.

Also, Shelley Hennig needs to be in more movies as she just brightens the screen. It's too bad she got killed off early in the game, as early as the trailers.

Speaking of which, Ouija's trailers made the movie looked like a generic horror movie. But it actually was quite well written in terms of the story even though there was nothing original about the ending.

Still, there were a few really scary moments that caught me by surprise. And those that didn't surprise me, had great tensions and scare effects that made the movie surprisingly enjoyable.

However, the logic sometimes just fail me - as what usually happens in weak horror movies just so they could move the plot along. One thing I still can't understand is why horror movies still has helpless kids walking willingly into a haunted house. Can we have some intelligence, please?

I still enjoyed the ending. At least the scares all made sense. If you have that in your horror movie, then you would have already won me over.

And I would keep an eye out for this particular horror writer, Stiles White, who also wrote The Possession which was just passable; but also, Knowing, which I very much liked. And as a first time director for Ouija, he has done a great job.
