The Rewrite (6/10)

Marc Lawrence is back with another romantic comedy, and brought Hugh Grant back with him.

The Rewrite reminded me a lot of Music & Lyrics. It may even be so similar that beat by beat, The Rewrite was just substituting music and lyrics for movie script writing.

But even though the movie was as predictable as can be, as was Grant's performance, I still found myself laughing and enjoying the movie. What can I say, Grant is his best when he's playing this kind of role - a sweet, stumbling buffoon that is just lovable even when he makes mistakes.

However, the scene-stealer here was J. K. Simmons. His comedic timing has become an art form. Also sharing that spark in livening up the screen was Allison Janney whose performance was better than the script written for her.

One thing that surprised me was Marisa Tomei who, after her resurgence in The Wrestler with an Oscar nomination, still couldn't get any better offers than these rom-coms. Somebody needs to give her another shot at dramatic roles.

And unfortunately, her character was the dullest of the bunch. Whenever her plot came onscreen, I couldn't wait for it to be over.
