Big Hero 6 (9/10)
Disney has done it again. And this time with a Marvel property.
The set up was beautiful. To have big brother Tadashi, voiced by Daniel Henney, look out for Hiro, voiced by Ryan Potter, in those subtle ways and to see Hiro being motivated and inspired; that was the first time that I was almost moved to tears.
That's but one of the many messages in the movie that worked so well. And every time Baymax, voiced by Scott Adsit - who did a phenomenal job here, gave Hiro a hug, and there were quite a few times, I again was almost moved to tears each time.
Baymax ultimately taught us how to love and what love is. And it's something that you wouldn't be able to portray in a live action movie that well. Baymax pulled at my heartstrings, tickled me, and made me fall in love with him.
The rest of the cast, especially T. J. Miller, were awesome as well. Although I wasn't sure why Genesis Rodriguez's Honey Lemon would pronounce Hiro's name with the accuracy of a Japanese tongue.
Jamie Chung, Damon Wayans Jr. and Maya Rudolph all gave life to their characters. And the great James Cromwell, I loved his character here.
The only two things, and I am nitpicking here, that I didn't think were up to par, were: Directors Don Hall and Chris Williams almost went a little bit cheesy when towards the end each of the Big Hero 6 finally found out how to defeat their antagonist. They way their monologues came off were a little bit old-fashioned. Perhaps a more experienced director could have handled that better.
And, let me go into SPOILER territory for a paragraph;
-----------------------------
I didn't like how the story ended. Again, we had to see a character sacrifice himself, in this case, it was Baymax. And the ending was something that was overused. (It was used in Guardians Of The Galaxy as well with Groot.) Not that it's a bad thing, but I would have accepted the movie better if everyone came out alive; or if they had to kill off a character, then let it stay dead.
-----------------------------
But the imagination of San Fransokyo from concept to the final visuals, was a masterpiece. The city looked beautiful and full of life, just like the movie itself. Overall, I loved it. And don't forget, this is a Marvel movie; so that means... at the end...
