This was truly disappointing. Following up on the runaway hit, Ted, Seth MacFarlane this time put himself in front of the camera as the main lead for A Million Ways To Die In The West.
And he went out and assembled a great cast that included Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Neil Patrick Harris, Sarah Silverman, Giovanni Ribisi and Amanda Seyfried.
But right from the start, every scene became like a stand-up comedy act for MacFarlane as he kept pumping out one joke after another without being able to sense the boredom that's creeping in in his audience.
Putting himself as a lead in his own movie and then writing and directing it might have been too much for MacFarlane. Somewhere along the line he lost sight of the progression and the storytelling in a comedy movie. Some scenes went on for too long, some scenes just didn't work. And the running time could have been shortened.
I thought Theron was a big miscast here. It might have even been her height that made the chemistry between her and MacFarlane looked fake. Seyfried, Ribisi and Harris on the other hand were good in their roles. Especially Harris, who had many opportunity to shine in this movie and he milked all of them. Silverman was... just Silverman.
As for Neeson, he's becoming the new Nicolas Cage, appearing in every movie he can get his hands on, or as long as he gets a paycheck.
This isn't to say there weren't some good and funny moments. But for a giant comedy movie like this, it should have been so much more funnier. I should have been laughing a lot more and loudly too. But I didn't.
And if there were a million ways to die in the west, and we did see many ways; how did the town kept its population up throughout the whole movie then?
