Kingsman: The Secret Service (8/10)

As one of my most anticipated movies of the year, I'm happy that it's one that came out early and not have to wait for the summer, and I'm glad it was so good.

Matthew Vaughn delivered as promised in his trailers. All the signature Vaughn action sequences were even better than in the movie. The blood bath in the church was a reminiscent of the "Red Wedding" episode in "Game Of Thrones".

The whole concept of the movie, a nod to the old spies movies and certain formulae of the old James Bond films, were very well executed. The setup of the story from the beginning immediately held my attention; and the character of Eggsy played by Taron Egerton, though stemmed from a predictable formula, was still entertaining enough.

Samuel L. Jackson as the mastermind with a lisp, brilliant choice by Jackson. And the notion of how he couldn't stand the sight of blood, another brilliant decision by Vaughn.

But it's Colin Firth that amazed me as an action star. There were two unforgettable action sequences by Firth, and credit must go to Vaughn for directing him in that light.

However, I left the cinema slightly disappointed. I expected the movie to be perfection and I was let down.

I didn't like some of the sub-plots, especially the one with the dog. Why throw such an old trick into such a new movie? And I didn't like how so many guns shooting at our hero after he infiltrated the final base and he never got hit. It's like the worst part of James Bond got brought into this film. It's Stormtroopers all over again.

And the headcount of the bad guys didn't quite add up from scene to scene. When Eggsy was being chased, there were too many to count. When he went back in, they all disappeared.

But overall, the movie was really entertaining. Not quite the Kick-Ass level but still a very strong one. Mark Strong was great - I was waiting for a twist from him that never came, so another good decision by Vaughn. Michael Caine had his moments. Jack Davenport's short stint was also very entertaining. And what a way to bring Mark Hamill back onto the silver screen!

The Gazelle hench-woman played by Sofia Boutella was fun. I would also like to see more Sophie Cookson's Lanceleot and see how she now fits into the future of this world.

Speaking of future, I believe there will be room for a sequel. I would love for one. But for it not to suffer like Kick-Ass 2, Vaughn needs to be back directing it. Otherwise the spark of this first one may be lost. Just like there has been no concrete news of Kick-Ass 3 yet.
