Spider-Man Takes First Step Into Marvel Cinematic Universe
Don't let the excitement overwhelm you just yet. There are still a lot of unclear information as to how this will work.
The initial report is that Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios are teaming up to re-brand and repackage Spider-Man!
A new Spider-Man, currently doesn't seem like it will be Andrew Garfield (and that's a shame), will be co-produced by Kevin Feige of Marvel and Amy Pascal of Sony. But Sony Pictures will still be the production company that finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the franchise.
Bob Iger, Chairman and CEO of Walt Disney Company, which owns Marvel; said in an interview that, "We're thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic opportunity for storytelling and franchise building."
Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, said, "Marvel, Kevin Feige and Amy, who helped orchestrate this deal, are the perfect team to help produce the next chapter of Spider-Man. This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans."
The new collaboration will see Spider-Man appear in one of the current Marvel films, though no confirmation as to which yet. Thereafter, Sony will follow up the next installment of Spider-Man with a now confirmed release date of 28 July 2017.
This also means that some of the previously confirmed dates for the rest of the MCU will be affected.
Thor: Ragnarok is now delayed by almost four months to 3 November 2017, making way for the new Spider-Man movie. This in turn delays Black Panther by about eight months to 6 July 2018. And this in turn pushes Captain Marvel to 2 November 2018 and also pushing Inhumans to 12 July 2019 - a newly announced date for Marvel.
Only the two-parter Avengers: Infinity War remains unaffected for 4 May 2018 and 3 May 2019.
