The Gunman (6/10)
Somehow I was expecting more from this movie. The trailer presented Sean Penn in an action-thriller that never really got to a full-on action front, nor a suspenseful thriller.
To me, this was a very generic story for its genre. There was nothing special, nothing stood out, and even the character development was not interesting even with Penn leading the way.
The cast was definitely more than capable of delivering great acting scenes. The heavy-hitters were Penn, Javier Bardem and Ray Winstone. Mark Rylance and Jasmine Trinca supported with fine acting as well.
And I had no complaints on Pierre Morel's direction. He delivered the action and the thrilling parts well, even the story progression was good. This was probably one of his better movies too.
The only weakness of the movie was the writing, or was it the adaptation. Like I mentioned before, this was a very generic piece of work that did not feel inspired. So I'm quite surprised that Penn decided to do this movie. It wasn't one that required a lot of acting from his part; I didn't think this movie challenged him at all, other than creating that body of his for the movie.
Also, I'm very curious as to why they got Idris Elba to come in just for two or three scenes. There was no need for an actor of his caliber at all to step into that role, unless you're telling me that this movie was shot around the same time as the first Thor movie.
Overall, it was a movie that should have had a more interesting storyline but the star power probably saved it.
