Still Alice (8.5/10)

This was a movie I've been wanting to catch ever since Julianne Moore was set to win Best Actress, and I was curious just for the fact that Moore beat out Rosamund Pike for the award, and I was hoping it would be Pike.

This movie had a great ensemble including Alec Baldwin, Kristen Stewart, Hunter Parrish and Kate Bosworth. All of them gave great performances to drive the movie and the pacing directors Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland was so consistent that never once did I felt the movie was slow or draggy, as this genre usually would.

Moore definitely was the heart and spirit of the movie. She made the audience felt for her character every step of the way, from the time she suddenly forget things to having the need to use a highlighter pen to highlight sentences she has already read.

Stewart probably surprised a lot of people with just how good she was. She completely shed off that sullen and pouting teenage-angst and delivered a believable performance - the kind of performance that caught my attention those few times I saw her before her Twilight years.

I only wished that there was more in Lisa Genova's novel to give Baldwin more range (or there was and just wasn't adapted by Glatzer and Westmoreland). It's been a while since Baldwin gave a brilliant performance but someone just have to pull it out of him.

But in the end, even though Moore gave a moving performance, especially towards the end where she brought tears to my eyes; but I still thought the award should have gone to Pike. That was still my favourite performance by an actress last year.
