The DUFF (6.5/10)

Directed by Ari Sandel, an Oscar winner for the Best Short Film category back in 2007, The DUFF is his first feature-length derbut.

The movie is based off of a novel of the same name by Kody Keplinger, and with what source material Sandel had to work with, it's actually not a bad effort.

What I liked about the movie was the first half. The setup through a rebranding of the premise (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) was interesting and funny enough that it entertained and kept the audience's attention with little problems.

Mae Whitman and Robbie Amell were very good choices as their chemistry seemed to work onscreen. Bella Thorne continued to play a familiar role and one that no longer impressed, but Bianca A. Santos and Skyler Samuels had more interesting roles that could have paid off more in the end.

Which brings me to what I didn't enjoy as much about the movie, the second half. It was filled with cliches and overused expositions that we've seen a thousand times in the genre. So nothing about the second half was as interesting as what the first half promised.

There were also the annoying bits like the changing of outfits in the mall while dancing with quick edits to an upbeat song playing in the background, but overall it was still quite enjoyable in the end.

Ken Jeong for once wasn't as annoying as I remember how he sometimes can be in this type of a cameo.
