The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (6/10)
The original movie was a charming and funny movie with a lot of smart quips to be highly entertaining. The sequel, The Second Best Marigold Hotel, didn't come with as much charm as the first one but still carried itself well.
Still directed by John Madden and this time with an original script by Ol Parker, the sequel carried on with where the story left off for all the tenants of said hotel. And with a few new faces that were much needed to breath fresh air to the franchise.
While Richard Gere and Tamsin Greig (from TV series "Episodes") were welcomed additions, I thought Gere could have had more screentime. His magnetism was a little underused. Same issue with David Strathairn who only popped up twice in the movie. He was completely underused and totally unnecessary in his second scene.
What I appreciated was the continuation of the stories of the characters that were so well told in the first movie. To go back to their world and see what they were up to was a real treat. Dev Patel continued to shine as an actor in this franchise and I think he's underappreciated for his work. What hurt him, however, was how the character was written to be a bit of a big baby, pouting and throwing tantrums unnecessarily; and he ended up being a little frustrating.
I liked the beginning and the middle; but when it came to the third act, that's when the story fell apart a little for me. A lot of things happened because they had to, things fell into place because they had to - too much of all these conveniences took me out of the story, like who ended up with who. Some turns came so unexpectedly that the ending became not such a pleasant surprise.
But like I said, the movie still had charm and boasted a very competent cast of character actors that was fun to watch.
