Ben Foster has not had a leading role before, not to my knowledge, anyway. He's usually playing one of the ensemble (X-Men: The Last Stand, Lone Survivor), the crazy guy (Alpha Dogs, Pandorum), the bad guy (Thirty Days Of Night, 3:10 To Yuma, Hostage), or someone you're sure who will betray his team later on (Pandorum).
But Foster is a talented actor. Every time he's on screen, you get drawn to him because he's so good at what he does. So I'm really excited to see him finally break out of all the sidekick and antagonistic roles. And if his portrayal of Lance Armstrong is strong enough, he's going to be wanted for different roles by casting agents from now on.
The Program is directed by Stephen Frears (who has been Oscar-nominated for his directions in The Grifters and The Queen) and starring Foster, Chris O'Dowd, Lee Pace, Jesse Plemons and Dustin Hoffman.
In the teaser trailer, I didn't get the feel that Foster look like Armstrong much, but I'm very eager to see what he does with portraying a real person. Can he transform himself enough so that even though his face differs from Armstrong a lot but he still captures the essence of the person?
The Program will be released later this year.
