Minions (4.5/10)
This movie reminded me why I never have any affinity towards the Minions ever since Despicable Me. I do not understand the hype around them and I do not know why so many adults are crazy about these things.
The first trailer for Minions made me question myself. The trailer tickled me and made me very curious. And then it had Sandra Bullock and Jon Hamm voicing some characters, I thought this might actually be good.
How wrong was I. Throughout the whole movie I only chuckled a few times. The beginning of the movie was probably the best part. But once the voice-over by Geoffrey Rush was done, and when we were left to that weird language of the Minions only, the movie took a bad dive.
So bad that it barely went back up again once Bullock came in. She was probably the best thing in the movie and the story, but whether it's because the Minions couldn't really be understood or it was just a boring story, there was nothing Bullock could have done to save it.
The other voice talents like Michael Keaton, Steve Carell, Steve Coogan and Allison Janney were all lost in the shuffle as none of them got enough screen time to be effective.
And towards the end it was just another cliche story arc of how the enemy was defeated. There was nothing original about this Despicable Me spin-off and it left me very disappointed.
The only other positive for me was that the animation itself was beautiful and with a lot of vibrant colours.
Maybe the movie is targeted at the younger audience, so it was just not for me.
