Channing Tatum Signs Gambit Deal
Why I'm reporting this news even though we already know Channing Tatum is the next Gambit is because a few days ago, a report came out claiming that Tatum could leave Gambit due to some disagreement with 20th Century Fox, but that his reps are still negotiating.
But everyone else (and I almost did as well) ran with the headline of "Channing Tatum Exits Gambit" or something along the lines of that. I almost click publish until I followed the links and saw that this wasn't the case at all.
I even paused to check if it was Aprils Fools' Day because I just couldn't believe Tatum would leave this project that he has been so instrumental in creating it and invested so much of his energy already. He even made a surprise appearance on the Fox panel few weeks ago at the San Diego Comic Con, joining a group photo with the X-Men and Fantastic Four cast.
So today, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that the deal has been signed, and Rupert Wyatt is confirmed to direct, Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg are producing alongside Tatum and his frequent-collaborator Reid Carolin, and shootings will begin this October for a 7 October 2016 release. So we can rest assured that we're still getting three X-movies come 2016.
Now, the question would be to see how big of a role will Tatum play in the X-universe because he could very well be the guy that replaces Hugh Jackman after he finishes his final Wolverine project. The X-Men needs a star to carry the franchise and Tatum clearly has the chops and likeability to do that.
But had Tatum walked, I would have lobbied for Taylor Kitsch to come back as Gambit. Just saying.
