Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (8.5/10)
Ethan Hunt and his spies are on disowned and on the run again by the government they are protecting.
The movie opened up with a bang, with that very scene that has been advertised all over the place. I heard Tom Cruise did that hanging-by-the-side-of-a-flying-plane more than five times! At his age, he continues to impress, both as a stuntman and as an action movie star.
But after that opening, it has set the tone for the entire movie. The action pieces came consistently. Even when the story slowed down for some needed expositions, director Christopher McQuarrie was so skillful that he has made every scene so compressed and so easy to understand that there were no fats to trim. Having said that, however, this movie could have done with 10 minutes shorter. Where to trim? No idea. But it was a tad too long.
I loved the relationship of Cruise and Simon Pegg. In one scene McQuarrie gave us everything there was to know about that relationship. And it's great to see Ving Rhames back, but I would have loved to see him in a bigger capacity. As well as Jeremy Renner, how come he didn't get an action sequence?
There's also a new action chick in town. Rebecca Ferguson came from nowhere and blew our minds. And she looked great doing it. She could be the next Emily Blunt.
We also got a very good and menacing antagonist in Sean Harris. He looked scary, but my qualm with him was how did he keep on forgiving somebody time and time again. That's just very out of character for him and I question McQuarrie's writing for this character.
But other than that, the dialogue has been brilliant. I loved everything that came out of Alec Baldwin. That's also the greatness of Baldwin. And as I've said before, the expositions were very concise and simple enough for us to wrap our minds around the story, so much so that the audience can follow and enjoy the action sequences that came next.
And every time the Mission: Impossible theme kicked in, it was a joy. Particularly the first couple of times.
