Last Knights (7.5/10)

Not to belittle director Kazuaki Kiriya but judging from his thin resume, how did he end up directing some of Hollywood's finest?

This was surprisingly a very good movie. It exceeded my expectations. There was a very good story, good progression and development, and also a few very dramatic scenes in it. The pacing was also commendable in building up the story, leading up to the final fight.

Great performances by Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman. Owen provided the dramatic more than once and Freeman, I was afraid he would just phone in a performance without much acting, but he delivered. Without his performance in the beginning the impact later on would have been marginalised.

What the movie lacked sorely was the focus on some of the sub-characters like the other knights. We did not get to know any of them, which in turn affected the third act of the movie (without going into spoilers territory).

Also, I would have expected better choreographed fight sequences but the action pieces were all created through editing.

But there were some great characters in here, like the antagonist and his bodyguard, and they added a lot into the story where you don't just see them as one-dimensional.

I really enjoyed this movie, more than I thought I would.
