The Interview (5/10)
I just managed to watch The Interview over the weekend, and I have to say, I'm a tad disappointed.
This movie was more of James Franco and Seth Rogen having fun making a movie together while hoping the rest of the world can enjoy it with them. Unfortunately, it wasn't a great attempt. And it left me wondering, why would North Korea bother with a movie that would have tanked at the box office anyway. Instead, everyone rushed to see it. More win to The Interview.
Franco was leading the movie, playing a news anchor of sorts, but he overacted in every scene and many times I found him jarring rather than funny with his antics.
Rogen was still Rogen, as he played the sidekick that would do anything for his best friend.
The few subplots in this movie were mostly throwaways as none of them had a proper progression. We even had that "Rogen party scene" where he and Franco were partying with their mouths wide open in slow-motion.
And as most of Rogen's movies (he co-directed this with Evan Goldberg), the middle tend to get a little bit draggy. And the payoff this time with Randall Park's Kim Jong Un getting in touch with his inner feelings didn't quite get to a significant level where it made the overall movie worth the wait and the watch. Had the character had some kind of redeeming actions that may have been a better way to end it.
Lizzy Caplan wasn't used to the best of her abilities, but Park was great as usual.
In the end, as something of a brainless comedy, it kind of served its purpose. The laugh-out-loud moments were sprinkled throughout the movie though none of them memorable. Which is exactly what this movie was.
