The Visit - Review (6.5/10)

Lauded by many critics as M. Night Shyamalan's return to form, I personally would disagree for two reasons.

One, in my opinion he has never left. Been a fan of his work, I have enjoyed most of his movies very much. And to me, this was one of the weaker entries. And two, The Visit is a very small budget movie, with almost no story and definitely no character development. While I did enjoy it somewhat, I thought he could have done better.

My negatives for The Visit would be some of the illogical points that happened in the movie. How Grandma was able to move as fast as she did on all fours still had no explanations. How Grandpa was being portrayed as someone that's very strong for his age, was taken down so easily towards the end. And why would Grandma be under the bed playing hide and seek? Makes no sense to me.

Still, the way Shyamalan created those scenes though, were really scary. He still knows how to create suspense and create scenes that scares. It's his forte and he has not lost it.

And when this movie had nothing to do with the supernatural, those two old folks still scared the crap out of me. All four of the main actors were fantastic, especially Deana Dunagan as Grandma because every time she comes onscreen, I wanted to look away. As well as Olivia DeJonge who should get more work after this.

I also liked how Shyamalan always puts in a little message at the end for us to takeaway. And the way Kathryn Hahn conveyed the message of not holding on to anger unfolded very effectively at the end.

I'm glad that the critics enjoyed this movie and gave a "fresh" certificate on RottenTomatoes. Now let's see what Shyamalan comes up with next.
