Vacation - Review (4/10)

Having no recollection of any of the Vacation movies that came before this (I probably never saw half of it), I went in with only the expectations from the trailers.

The movie opened with what has been promised in the trailers. Getting to know this Griswold family was enjoyable. Especially when the younger brother kept bullying the elder.

And it seemed like everything from the trailer came from the first half of the movie. And most of the best parts in the trailers were also the best parts of the first half. So when the Griswolds left Chris Hemsworth and Leslie Mann, it just got boring and draggy.

Even when Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo showed up, things never picked up and it continued to plateau until the end. Charlie Day's character didn't seem to gel in properly. We could have done without that entire sequence as it didn't benefit the movie.

And the key messages in the movie from Chase's character, about appreciating the destination because of the journey, and another from Ed Helms' character, about how he's already gotten everything he wanted in life; felt like throwaways from the script. They were not given any emphasis and were included just to be included.

By the time we got to "Walley World", it didn't elevate the energy of the movie but made it dipped. So I guess Chase's philosophy in life didn't work for this movie. The lousy journey did not make me appreciate the destination at all.

I would be surprised if there would be another sequel to this.
