Editorial: Oscars 2016 Nominations And My Thoughts
The biggest annual movie event, the Oscars or the 88th Academy Awards, have just released the full list of nominations.
The Revenant is leading the pack with 12 nominations and is followed by Mad Max: Fury Road with 10 nominations.
The event will be hosted by Chris Rock on 28 February 2016.
Below is the list of the biggest categories. I have noted down my personal preference to win the category based on what I've seen (my pick). I have also made informed guesses based on all the buzz around the movie (will win), and these usually differs from my choices.
Unfortunately, and I am quite shocked, there are still so many movies that I have not yet seen which are nominated. I am completely aghast and appalled that I haven't seen any of the Best Supporting Actress category. None. This is crazy.
I have tried to catch up with as many of the Oscar-worthy movies but the big ones like Spotlight, Carol, The Hateful Eight and The Danish Girl were all out of my grasp.
Those that I did manage to catch, like Black Mass, Legend, Straight Outta Compton, Trainwreck, either didn't get nominated as predicted or didn't hit the major categories.
There were also a few surprises:
1) Ridley Scott and Quentin Tarantino were not in the Best Director category. They won't be happy about this. I would switch out Adam McKay for any of the two. I'll even throw in Ryan Coogler's name as I love what he did with Creed.
2) The Peanuts Movie didn't make the Best Animation category. Even though it wasn't the best, but I still thought it deserved a nomination for what it was able to achieve.
3) Tom Hardy has had a big year. And he should have gotten a nomination for Best Actor for his work in Legend.
4) One could also argue that Johnny Depp and Will Smith deserved to be in the nomination list for their performances in Black Mass and Concussion respectively. Who would they replace? No idea as I haven't seen enough of the movies in that category.
5) Alicia Vikander deserved a nomination, but I would have thought it to be for Ex Machina. Her performance made me believe that she was an A.I. and not a human being. But I haven't seen The Danish Girl so I can't put up a stronger argument. She also has had a big year in 2015 for everything that she has done.
6) As for the Best Picture category, they have 10 spots they can fill but they only filled eight. I wouldn't have minded seeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens as well as Ex Machina fill up those last spots, or even Creed and Inside Out. These movies wouldn't feel out of place there.
7) Aaron Sorkin is one of the best writers out there and yet, even with a strong showing from Steve Jobs, he was left out of the running.
8) Idris Elba has had a ton of rave reviews for his work in Beast Of No Nation, so it is another wonder why he didn't make the cut; a reminiscent to last year's David Oyelowo's snub and another chance to add diversity into the mix.
