Editorial: Hey Wolverine, Say Hello To Deadpool!
I started writing this post two days ago after the incredible weekend 20th Century Fox's Deadpool has achieved. The movie has gone where no other mainstream (anti) superhero has gone before: by becoming the most successful R-rated movie of all-time!
Ryan Reynolds has had 10 years of preparation to play this role. But he was born to play it.
In a world where comic book characters take centre stage, with great actors embodying the characters, whether it's Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Chris Hemsworth as Thor or Chris Evans as Captain America; there is even room for debate whether James McAvoy or Patrick Stewart is the better Professor Xavier. But only two actors have achieved the ultimate portrayals of these larger-than-life characters.
Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. It will be difficult to replace these actors for these characters and I'm sure studios execs are a little nervous now that both actors have finished their contracts.
Well, we can now add Ryan Reynolds as the third. Even when Deadpool is wearing a mask that encapsulates his entire head, you will only imagine Reynolds' face under it. No one will be able to take that place anytime soon.
With Deadpool finishing off the President's Day holiday weekend with a massive USD 132.7 million, Fox not only cancelled out the bad taste left by abysmal Fantastic Four, they must now be wondering what is their next strategy for their upcoming properties.
And today, according to ComingSoon via a user from Reddit, we learned that the final installment to close out the Wolverine trilogy - where we're supposed to be saying a proper goodbye to Hugh Jackman - has been given R-rating privileges. I personally don't think it needs it but that's for another post to discuss.
More importantly right now, Fox has their next Wolverine. Once Jackman hangs up his claws, Fox can rest assured they can fall back on their latest brand. And he comes in this red and black unitard and has a mouth that just won't shut up. His name is Pool. Dead Pool.
Without going too much into spoilers, there's even a kind of passing-of-the-torch or stamp-of-approval situation going on.
For a while now, some pundits have thought that Channing Tatum would be the one to fill the void that will be left by Wolverine. And Tatum's Gambit movie was supposed to come out in the last quarter of this year too but now there has been no reports about the start of filming and it's highly likely to be pushed to next year.
This could be because of the huge budget given to the movie or the studio just wants to see how Deadpool performs first. Either way, I believe we'll hear a new release date very soon, after the numbers put up by Deadpool.
Another thing we can be sure of is the studio giving the green light to Reynolds and his plans for bringing in X-Force. And Deadpool in X-Force will be what Wolverine was in X-Men. We will probably see a couple of X-Force characters in the next Deadpool first as an introduction before we get the X-Force movie. Who knows, maybe Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead will be included too.
I believe Fox will now start a timeline very similar to Marvel and their Avengers characters. The X-universe is a huge one and there are so many characters they could play around with. I wouldn't be surprised that by 2018 and beyond we'll be getting two X-movies every year. And that's just to begin with.
