Allegiant - Review (3.5/10)
The Divergent Series' latest offering, Allegiant, just couldn't win me back. Worse, it has no hook for me for the finale next year.
I pity the talent involved, especially Miles Teller and newcomer Jeff Daniels. They were the best parts of the movie but nothing they could do to alleviate it.
The movie started off with a series of very rocky unfortunate events. First was the fake assassination in the bushes - how stupid was everyone else in the movie, seriously? Then it was that roadblock that was pathetically staged by the director, Robert Schwentke; a feeble attempt to get the adrenaline of the audience going. And capping off was the death of one of the good guys.
This wasn't the first time that the director of this series ignore all the bad guys chasing the good guys, and have the heroes stand still to take a breather even though they should be running for their lives.
And towards the end, it was that memory-wiping gas. How closely do you have to get to the gas for it to work? We saw the gas got released and everyone was running like chickens with their heads cut off as the gas spread all around them. And even in a small room where the gas enters from the vents in the ground, yet nothing happened to the people inside the room. How did this gas work?
I always say, a movie needs to work on its own merit. Not as a supplement to the source of material. And watching this movie, like all other young adult materials, I felt like I needed to read the book in order to fully understand it.
And that's just a horrible way of storytelling.
