Marvel's Captain America: Civil War 5th Biggest Opening Weekend In US
First of all, let's look at the numbers and the standings.
All-time biggest opening weekends:
1) Star Wars: The Force Awakens - USD 247.97M
2) Jurassic World - USD 208.81M
3) The Avengers - USD 207.44M
4) Avengers: Age Of Ultron - USD 191.27M
5) Captain America: Civil War - USD 179.14M
6) Iron Man 3 - USD 174.14M
I honestly thought Captain America: Civil War would have done better and opened above USD 200M. It's a better movie than Avengers: Age Of Ultron; it tracked better and the positive reviews came in a month before its opening too.
And I honestly think it's because of how inconsistently Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice was received, to put it lightly; that people are not rushing out to see Civil War. Those who claimed that Marvel paid off critics to crap on Batman v Superman have no idea what they are talking about. The two giant studios for comic book movies need the other to do well in order for them to do well because the casual movie goers see this as a genre as a whole.
Nevertheless, a big congratulations to Civil War for climbing up to the fifth spot; and to Walt Disney Studios for taking four of the top 5 spots in biggest opening weekends.
The movie also raked in USD 673.1M globally after opening a week earlier in other countries like Brunei. It should have no problems crossing the USD 1B mark.
