Review - The Angry Birds Movie (6.5/10)
I was one of the skeptical ones when I first heard that Hollywood is making an Angry Birds movie. Sounded like a cash grab that would not have a competent premise to back it up.
But I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised at what they have done. First was to have writer Jon Vitti, who wrote a couple of the Alvin And The Chipmunks movies, come up with great characters for this movie; and second was to have a great cast of voice actors.
The one that really stole the movie was Josh Gad once again, reminiscent of his portrayal of Olaf in Frozen. His character here, Chuck the yellow speedster, had some of the best lines and best scenes. Together with Danny McBride, these two birds had great chemistry.
Keegan-Michael Key as the judge, and Peter Dinklage as the Great Eagle, also had great materials to work with and they brought the house down.
There was a hilarious and long sequence of the search for the Great Eagle when Gad and McBride just went full on crazy with their war cries that brought non-stop laughters to the audience. And to be followed by the equally crazy Great Eagle, the direction of that whole sequence was a fantastic piece of cinema comedy.
Jason Sudeikis as the protagonist and Bill Hader as the antagonist both worked very well and had great back-and-forth.
Unfortunately, the beginning was a tad slow for me during the setup, and the ending didn't finish strong. It's also a good thing they didn't focus too much on the slingshot, which is what the game is all about. But just enough to have the essence of the game in there and justify it as an Angry Birds property.
There was also a lot of great use of puns, and some play on words or phrases like "pluck my life" which I thought was good fun.
No doubt this movie will make a lot of money and we can expect more of the birds versus pigs adventure in the near future.
