M. Night Shyamalan has returned with another original psychological thriller, Split, with the first trailer released by Universal Pictures.
Starring James McAvoy and Anya Taylor-Joy, who seems to keep getting cast in horrors and thrillers.
This first trailer gives a good indication of what the movie is about, with McAvoy playing a mentally-unstable schizophrenic with 23 personalities. This will definitely give him a chance to stretch his acting abilities though the second half of the trailer still has the shadow of Professor Xavier.
There are still some very Shyamalan shots, camera works and his brand of suspense which I always appreciate. But will he ever rise to The Sixth Sense type of quality? Not likely and not with these smaller budget movies.
Split will be out on 20 January 2017 and will likely dominate the box office then. And I do respect Shyamalan from taking a huge step back from creating blockbusters and opt for these smaller projects releasing in quiet periods like the dumping grounds of January.
