Liam Neeson's A Monster Calls Delays Release To Enter Award Season
Focus Features today has announced that their upcoming fantasy spectacular, A Monster Calls, has been delayed.
Reason for the delay is a positive one as the movie is opting to jump right into the middle of the award season.
Originally scheduled for 21 October 2016 (which isn't all that far off from award contention), according to ComingSoon, it is now scheduled to be released in limited cinemas on 23 December 2016; and to be followed by a wide release on 6 January 2017.
Oscar contenders have been known to do just that, with recent precedents set by American Sniper in 2014/2015 and The Revenant in 2015/2016.
For the studio to put this as an award contender shows a great deal of promise as to the quality of this film which is directed by J.A. Bayona. And if I have to wait a couple more months for it, then so be it.
The only concern I have is whether this is a Best Picture contender or a Best Visual Effects contender. Transformers: Dark Of The Moon was nominated for three of the technical awards and look how bad that movie was.
