[Review] Morgan (6.5/10)
Following in his father's footsteps perhaps, Morgan is Luke Scott's Alien.
The basic concept of a group of scientists encountering a foreign and unpredictable life form, plus the way the story was told; or perhaps I'm just reading into things that weren't there.
Unfortunately, we've already seen Ex Machina last year, which garnered two nominations at this year's Academy Awards and winning one. And that was a much better movie than this.
And the other downside to Morgan was that if the ending was meant to be a bit of a twist, you can see that coming halfway through the movie already. So that wasn't hidden well.
Also in what little action sequences that we got, Scott just isn't as capable in this department yet as I couldn't make out what was happening half the time.
But other than those two points, I thought the direction was really good and kept up the tension when it needed to. Some parts of the pacing was slightly slow but it never felt out of place nor inconsistent. And for the most part, I really enjoyed Scott's work here including the casting.
With a running time of only 92 minutes, not all the cast in this small group could have had enough screen time but with the little amount each of them got, they were good enough. Michelle Yeoh in particular was only in a few scenes but she wasn't just one dimensional.
Jennifer Jason Leigh and Paul Giamatti were also great in those little scenes they had. But the movie's focus was mostly on Kate Mara and Anya Taylor-Joy, and they were just electric to watch. Taylor-Joy has got to be an up-and-coming in Hollywood by now.
I would have liked more from what this movie had to offer because it came on the heels of Ex Machina and Her, but it was definitely a good introduction for Luke Scott.
